Interview with Rosanna Morris

Rosanna Morris has been passionate about art since she could first hold a pencil, but it was during her foundation diploma at the Bristol School of Art that she discovered her love for relief printing. Inspired by a trip to Paris and the striking wheat-paste reliefs she encountered, Rosanna returned home determined to create bold, impactful imagery. Her life-sized woodcuts of British farming pasted onto the city’s abandoned walls, marked the beginning of a journey that has since flourished into a dynamic career.

In this interview, Rosanna shares her artistic roots, her advice for emerging artists, and her love for Daler-Rowney products like Lyra pencils and Adigraf inks. She also opens up about the role social media has played in her career and the techniques she’s eager to explore in the future.

What inspired you to pick up a brush and start painting?

I have had a pencil in hand since I could hold one. I first got excited about relief print at 18 during my foundation diploma at the Bristol School of Art. During the course, we took a trip to Paris where we encountered huge relief wheat pastes around the city. Once home I wanted to make my drawings big and began carving huge life-size woodcuts of British farming and pasted them on abandoned walls around the city.

When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?

From a very early age, I took so much joy in making imagery. I've never been a wordsmith and it's with images and storytelling I learnt to understand the world around me.

What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?

Practice every day. Draw for the sake of drawing and make images for the sake of making images, not for outside validation. With time you will improve, but don't give up.

What is the best tip you were told early in your career?

The only difference between an artist who makes it and one who doesn't is that the one who get there doesn't give up.

How has social media helped your career?

Without Instagram I wouldn't have been able to buy my house, I'm very grateful for these platforms, even if I also struggle with them.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Old masters of the printmaking world. Social justice movements and land struggles around the world.

What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product and why?

I'm obsessed with Lyra pencils, Arches paper and of course Adigraf inks.

What technique you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?

I would love to spend more time exploring oil painting.
