Interview with Björn Nordström
Painting realism to showcase emotions whilst portraying light is important to Björn and his work. We recently sat down with him in a quick-fire interview to hear more about his journey and inspiration.
Björn Nordström paints realistic portraits in acrylics. Even if his art is very realistic, so is the realism itself not the main focus for him. The main focus is the feelings in the artwork. Björn wants to create a melancholic feeling, but at the same time, he wants to keep his painting as stripped down and neutral as possible. Björn also wants to get away from the everyday and create something more timeless in his paintings.
What inspired you to pick up a brush and start painting?
I don't remember, I always enjoyed drawing/painting since I was a child.
When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?
I have always loved to draw and paint since I was a child. It's something very relaxing to forget everything else for a while and just be in the moment with your artwork.
What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?
Don't compare your art with others. Focus on your own progress instead.
What is the best tip you were told early in your career?
Don't get stuck doing the same thing over and over. Try to evolve instead.
How has social media helped your career?
Social media has helped me a lot, it boosted my self-esteem and made me believe more in myself and my art.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
From natural beauty in a female, from vulnerability or from light & shadows.
What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product and why?
System3 is by far my favourite. It's not too thick, covers well, and looks good on a canvas. And it's also affordable.
What is a technique that you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?
Not a technique, but I would love to try to paint with watercolours sometime.
