UNIQLO Tate Play Oscar Murillo: The flooded garden – Tate x Daler-Rowney
Running from 20th July until 26th August 2024, Tate Modern embraced the joy of painting by inviting artist Oscar Murillo to transform the Turbine Hall into a vibrant painting garden as part of the UNIQLO Tate Play programme. This unique installation offers visitors a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creative process, as they are encouraged to "join him in creating a vibrant work of epic proportions. Pick up a paintbrush and make your mark using wave-like strokes to flood a giant canvas." This collaborative artwork promises to be a dynamic and immersive experience, blending individual creativity with the collective energy of countless participants.
Murillo’s installation is a living, evolving piece inspired by the renowned Claude Monet and his iconic paintings of the flower garden at Giverny, France. Monet's work, known for its lush, vivid portrayal of nature, has deeply influenced this project. The concept of a "flooded garden" not only evokes the idea of a garden submerged in colour but also hints at the fluid, almost aquatic quality of Monet’s brushstrokes. The Turbine Hall, with its towering space, becomes the perfect setting for this ambitious endeavour, offering visitors a canvas as vast as the imagination. This event builds upon Oscar Murillo's own celebrated series, Surge, which is known for its expressive use of oil paint that flows across the canvas like water.
Visitors to the Turbine Hall are encouraged to use a palette inspired by Murillo’s distinctive colour choices, featuring deep blues, bright yellows, and vivid pinks. These hues not only echo Monet’s Garden but also reflect the emotional intensity and dynamic nature of Murillo’s own work. The collaborative artwork promises to be a striking visual experience, blending the individual contributions of countless participants into a cohesive whole.
Daler-Rowney was selected by Tate to provide them with more than 3,000 litres of System3 Acrylic Paint. Cedric Grossmann, Sales & Marketing Director says:
“Our mission is to make art accessible to all, and we are thrilled to contribute to the first time ever that a live painting event has been hosted in the Turbine Hall. As a British Heritage brand and one of the last artists’ paint manufacturers in the UK, we are delighted to partner with Tate Modern for this project.”
Daler-Rowney also introduced 4 new, unique colours specifically developed from our iconic System3 Acrylic Collection just for this programme. In an effort to maintain environmental responsibility, we will be taking back used bottles for recycling at our dedicated onsite centre, ensuring that the creative process remains as sustainable as possible.
This latest commission as part of Tate Modern’s UNIQLO Tate Play programme offers a unique opportunity for art lovers and novices alike to contribute to a work of epic proportions, immersing themselves in the joy of painting and the legacy of two great artists.
