Interview with Lulu Aguiar

What inspired you to pick up a brush and start painting?
Each painting I create, whether in acrylic or watercolour, is a pursuit of creative freedom and an attempt to depict a place where I find space to dream. I have a deep passion for the feminine and for nature, in how the softness, beauty, and strength of both run parallel, nourishing one another as if they were a single being. Through this union, I compose elements of botanical nature, ethereal landscapes, and the female figure, often accompanied by animals that symbolise the feeling and strength I so deeply seek. It’s as if each of my emotions or desires flows into the painting. Like writing poetry for those who write with words, I seek poetry through my brushes.
When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?
Coming from a family of artist grandparents, fashion and art have always been part of my world, and I bring the essence of that upbringing into my paintings.

What is a typical day in the life of an artist?
The daily life of an artist is filled with a lot of work, research, trial and error, and frustrations, but it is always very rewarding to work with what you love. An artist’s day-to-day is always challenging — lots of research, testing, sometimes frustrations, mistakes, successes, bureaucracies, technicalities — but the moment you create a piece or a project where all your creativity is expressed openly, that is priceless. Working with what you love is a privilege.
What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?
Create art that is true to your essence. Your audience will find you, and the connection will be genuine. Don’t try to make art just to please others, as that will only distance you from your purpose.
What is the best tip you were told early in your career?
Stay focused, keep studying, and learn from your mistakes; let them be a tool for growth.

How has social media helped your career?
Social media is a powerful tool for promotion and interaction with your audience, as well as for discovering new artists and exploring different paths for your art. Use it wisely, and it will bring good results.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I seek inspiration in every moment of my life, even if unconsciously, but it mainly comes from nature and the feminine.
What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product and why?
The Aquafine Watercolour paint range, but would love to try other materials.

What is a technique that you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?
Oils!! After more than ten years working primarily with watercolour, I decided to experiment with acrylic paint on larger formats. And it was an excellent experience. So I believe that oil paint will be a leap forward in my learning.
Who would you like to do a commission for and why?
I would love to create a commissioned piece for a fashion campaign by Prada or Miu Miu. I have a long history in fashion, and Miuccia Prada has always been a reference for me! Aligning my feminine, organic work with hers in a campaign would be an honour.

What has been your favourite commission to date and why?
I have two very special projects that I developed. One is a large mural for Honda's office in São Paulo. The other is a series of watercolours inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, created for the launch of a Montblanc product here in Brazil. Additionally, in May 2019, I did a live sketch event for the brand Carolina Herrera. Mrs. Herrera herself was in Brazil, and I had the opportunity to meet her and present a sketch of her painted by me. It was a very special day.
What has been your favourite exhibition/art trade fair that you have exhibited at and why?
The most recent art exhibition I participated in was Fargo, the largest fair in the central region of Brazil, held in May 2025. It is a very special fair, as it brings together artists from the Midwest and all over Brazil with high-end galleries and fosters a very intense exchange between artists, the public, gallery owners, and curators. I felt a strong connection from the audience with my work, especially with the deep feminine theme I presented at this latest edition of the fair.
