Interview with Jasvir Kambo
With the Graduate Collection expanding with the new watercolour sets last year, we recently sat down with Jasvir Kambo, a Graduate Collection user, to explore her journey to becoming a professional artist.
Jasvir is a self-taught artist with a passion for creating vibrant and evocative artwork. Specialising in portraits, she primarily works with oils, capturing the essence of her subjects with bold strokes and fearless use of colour. Her art is a testament to her belief in innovation and the endless possibilities within the realm of painting.
In addition to portraits, Jasvir occasionally explores the natural world, bringing florals to life with the same intensity and raw energy that define her human subjects. Her approach to art is characterised by a willingness to experiment with mixed media, blending traditional techniques with unconventional materials to push the boundaries of her creativity.
What inspired you to pick up a brush/pencil and start painting/drawing?
My inspiration has always been life experiences and the ability to express my emotions with colour rather than words.
When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?
I started drawing when I was 10 but really got passionate about it much later in life.
What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?
Keep practicing. Drawing every day improves your visual skills and builds confidence. Allow yourself to make mistakes and improve. Art is all about the journey and the process.
What is the best tip you were told early in your career?
Never give up. Keep going, keep learning.
How has social media helped your career?
I love watching other artists, I take a little from each artist and try and improve my own skills.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I am a people watcher. This is a great way to improve drawing and painting portraits.
What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product and why?
The charcoal tin set. Simple charcoal is easy to use and has great results. Perfect for on-the-go sketching while travelling or just on a day out in the park.
What is a technique that you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?
I’ve not tried glazing. I would really like to try this out to see a little smoothness in my paintings.
