Interview with Emma Godfrey

Known for her Pantone Series, Emma Godfrey sat down with us to discuss how she got started in her career and explained how social media has helped her career.

Emma Godfrey is a mixed-media artist based in Cheshire. Her style of work ranges from bold, colourful abstracts to realistic landscapes and everything in between. Emma loves working with any medium that she can get her hands on, this helps expand her creativity and skill set.

Growing up in Hastings, a seaside town in Sussex, was the perfect place to ignite Emma's passion for art. Immersed with the ever-changing sea and Sunday walks in nature as a child was the foundation of Emma's inspiration. Drawing from the natural world around us.

What inspired you to pick up a brush and start painting?

I have always been creative, even since I was a child. I stopped painting regularly after University. It was when I was look online and came across a painting tutorial that I decided I wanted to pick my passion back up again.

When did your love of art start? Did you always want to be an artist?

My love of art started when my mother caught me drawing on her bedroom walls with her lipstick. From this I was always seen nose deep in a sketch book with crayons surrounding me. I've always been creative and love every moment of it, it's a part of me and makes me who I am.

What would be your advice for new artists just starting up?

Practise is key but also enjoy the process, try out different techniques and materials to discover what you love. It's very easy to expect to sit down and create a masterpiece immediately, but this is not always the case. You will create artwork that you hate and that's absolutely fine, you just need to keep going.

What is the best tip you were told early in your career?

Do not compare yourself to other artists in terms of style and their journeys, especially when you are starting out. You will find your own voice/style, so don't panic.

How has social media helped your career?

Social media has helped my career by making it accessible to anyone and everyone. It has been a blessing as it's helped put my artwork to the rest of the world and to be seen by so many people, as well as presenting many great opportunities.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from nature, it's an endless supply. From composition, texture and colour!

What is your favourite Daler-Rowney product and why?

I love the FW Acrylic inks, especially the pearlescent range. I feel it adds a gorgeous finishing touch and a sprinkle of sparkle to any artwork.

What is a technique that you haven't tried yet that you would love to try & why?

I would love to try palette knife painting, I've seen other artists work with this and have been amazed with the textures and the 3D elements it creates.
