Mala Gold by Kat Davies

'Mala Gold' by Kat Davies - Pastel -
This painting of a young male lion explores the endless possibilities of capturing beautiful lighting in soft pastel. Pastel lends itself beautifully to the representation of fur, skin, eyes, sunlight and shadow. There were no rules in creating this piece - it was an instinctive work measuring 18 x 12 inches which paid no attention to whether the effects were to be achieved by working light to dark or vice versa, whether there was 'too much black' or consciously paying any attention to principles of colour theory or composition. For this reason, it is a work which celebrates the fun and spontaneity of pastel and lives only to capture a moment in the life of a wild cat and its beautiful, if savage, environment.
