This painting is from a photograph I took whilst visiting a Berlin Zoo last year. I recall this encounter vividly. The big cats were inside and the cages seemed so small! This particular tiger seemed to reach out to me and make a ‘connection’ with his extremely mesmerising stare. He seemed resigned to his life within bars and his unhappiness seemed clear to me. I decided then and there that I would to paint him and try to recapture that hypnotic gaze. I was extremely privileged to share a ‘connection’ with this majestic animal and will always remember that special day. Life would never be the same without these wonderful creatures and we must do all we can to protect them.
Painted in gouache on mount board. (15x12 inches)
