Blanche et Noir

This is a paining of the Vallee Blanche in Chamonix, France; as viewed from Lac Blanc. The Vallee Blanche is a valley that is home to the Mer du Glace, a large glacier that curls around the mountain range and brings skiers and climbers back to Chamonix village. You can see the two parts of the glacier in the paining, one in the centre of the picture, where it is still thick and full of crevasses and the other part (the shrinking part) curling around the mountains, like a road.

I thought it would make the painting more dramatic and contemporary in Black and White. I loved painting it, I actually learned a lot about shadow and tone as I only had two 'colours' to use. The whole thing was done with palette knives, except for the clouds, they were done with brushes to get the 'fluffy' appearance.
