I need to 'matt' a shellac finish; is there a D-R matt varnish that would acheive this. Also is it possible to put a matt varnish of some sort over gouache to keep the matt effect and give a protective coat.I am working on a 300year old picture frame which needs to have a matt black finish.

Hi suz

Our Artists Matt Varnish should be suitable for use on a shellac finish.

Over Designers Gouache, the Matt Varnish could be tried on a test piece, but may not work as it is likely to soak into the colour (to some extent this depends upon what the gouache is painted onto).

Otherwise apply our Poster and Watercolour Varnish (this is glossy) to seal the surface, then when dry apply the Artists Matt Varnish.
