A Jobbing Illustrator’s Blog #1
Welcome to my first blog entry! The beginning of a new working relationship with Daler-Rowney, that began what must be ten months ago when one day I was wondering how to update my website. I was originally thinking of getting some advertising by DR on my website, so I emailed them with absolutely no expectation of a reply. To my pleasure they did reply but they were thinking of something entirely different and suggested me doing a blog instead. Fast-forward many months and here we are.
Luckily the timing of the start of my blog also coincides with the start of a new picture book. I received the manuscript last week from the publisher Little Tiger Press which I have read and to my delight is a really sweet story about a mouse and her friend the Moon. I have worked with the author Christina Butler before on seven other books and she has a beautifully classic style of writing with plenty of inspiring descriptions for me to sink my teeth into.
The very first thing I am going to do is make a list of all the animal characters, all the background elements like corn, mountains, lightning etc and research on the internet, books and magazines. Don’t have the time to visit a mountain and hope a thunderstorm will happen or visit a zoo. So armed with a stack of reference material I will start sketching some ideas.
Getting a lightning storm into a picture book is going to be a challenge...
