How to Paint an Abstract Painting with Acrylic

Learn how to paint an abstract painting with Simply Acrylic Paint and other products by using this step-by-step guide created by Daler-Rowney artist Amylee Paris, and is easy for beginners to follow and explore abstract themes and acrylic paint!

Step 1

The first step

Use the palette to mix neon orange with white to make a light orange, creating a very petty pale apricot shade.

With this new colour, paint 4 rectangular shapes on the canvas as in the demonstration then leave it to dry.

Step 2

The black shapes

Using the flat tip brush, apply the black paint straight out of the tube.
Draw black rectangular shapes against the orange shapes then leave it to dry.

Tip: wash the brush well with each colour change.

Step 3

The golden shapes

Apply the gold paint to the black rectangles. The gold paint is semi transparent, so you will need 3 coats of paint to get a very dark gold.
Let the paint dry.

Step 4

The lines

Using the black marker, hand draw horizontal or vertical lines in the blank spaces on the canvas.
Vary the thickness of the lines to give the composition more dynamism.

Step 5

The dots

Using the the marker, make black dots on the pale orange parts.
And now, you are done over!
All that's left is to find a place to showcase your painting. It can easily be integrated into a modern and uncluttered interior.
