Mr Jeff Chapman-Crane

I was born in the Southern Appalachian mountains of east Tennessee, the third of four children of Ralph and Ruth Crane.  It was here that I received my only formal instruction, four years of high school art under Don Hilton, a truly extraordinary teacher.  I always knew what I wanted to do, and since 1980 I have been able to make my living as a full-time professional artist.

In 1984 I married Sharman Chapman, and we combined our last names.  Our son, Evan, was born in 1987, and we currently live in Eolia, Kentucky, a small, rural community nestled between the state’s two highest mountains.

The theme of my work is the culture of the Southern Highlands with an emphasis on portraits of the Appalachian people.
