Peter Hammond
Peter was born and raised near Dewsbury in Yorkshire's West Riding, UK and was moved to Lee-on-the-Solent in 2006. After working as a joiner in a tannery and as a cinema projectionist, he followed his father into the textile mills. However, his day a the mills came to an abrupt end with an industrial accident that left Peter with epilepsy and breathing problems.
Having left work, Peter rekindled his childhood interest in art. In 1980 after studying at Dewsbury and Batley Art College, he began pencil and ink sketches of the industrial places so familiar to him. He developed these detailed landscapes, painted mostly from memory, with bold blocks of colour. These vivid urban scenes, crowded with brightly dressed people, are now characteristic of Peter's prolific work and distinctive style.
